My Approach

As an integrative psychotherapeutic counsellor, using a person-centred approach allows me to support you with self-belief, trust, and confidence to facilitate personal growth and positive change. I firmly believe that by embracing our individuality and unique perspectives, we can make meaningful changes that truly resonate with us. Building a strong therapeutic relationship with you, fostering trust and openness, is crucial.

I offer a variety of evidence-based tools and techniques tailored to address the specific issues impacting your life – all within a compassionate, safe, and non-judgemental space.

Therapeutic modalities I might draw upon include person-centred theory, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Psychodynamic theory, alongside wider mindfulness exercises and communication strategies.

Person-Centred Theory

Person-centred therapy, a non-directive talk therapy that focuses on your innate capacity for self-healing and personal growth. In this approach, you are empowered to lead the therapeutic process, with me as your therapist providing a supportive, non-judgmental environment characterised by unconditional positive regard, empathy, and genuineness to foster self-awareness and self-actualisation.

How It Works

My role as the therapist is to provide the necessary conditions for the client's natural self-healing process to occur. By creating a space for deep, authentic exploration, you can gain self-awareness, understand your true self, and find your own path forward, leading to positive personal growth and self-acceptance.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT IS a type of psychotherapy that helps individuals change unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours to manage problems and improve their emotional well-being. It works by focusing on the connection between thoughts, feelings, and actions, helping people identify and challenge negative thoughts to improve their mood and behaviour. CBT is a structured, goal-oriented therapy used for a range of conditions, including depression, anxiety, phobias, and chronic pain.

How CBT Works

Identify patterns: CBT helps you recognise unhelpful or irrational negative thoughts and behaviours that contribute to your problems.

Challenge thoughts: You work with me to challenge these thoughts and replace them with more realistic and positive ones.

Modify behaviours: The therapy also helps you change behaviours that worsen negative thoughts and feelings.

Learn coping skills: CBT teaches practical, self-help strategies to manage challenges, learn new ways to cope with problems, and improve your quality of life.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic theory is a psychological approach that emphasises the influence of unconscious mental processes, early childhood experiences, and interpersonal relationships on personality and behaviour. Key concepts include the id, ego, and superego (the three structures of personality), and defence mechanisms. The theory is based on the principle that unconscious thoughts and feelings, often rooted in childhood, drive our actions and can manifest as behavioural patterns, shaping who we are.

How Psychodynamic Therapy Works

  • Develop self-awareness: Psychodynamic therapy encourages you to develop awareness of your emotions and process unresolved feelings by exploring your unconscious mind.
  • Accepting relationship with your therapist: The relationship with me as your therapist is key to this therapeutic approach. Having an accepting and trusting relationship encourages you to talk freely and openly about childhood and your relationship with your parents
  • Transference: Transference is where you redirect feelings you experienced in previous significant relationships, or during childhood, onto your therapist. Transference can help you both learn more about your feelings, behaviours, and actions, and then resolve the feelings that originate from these relationships.
