Frequently asked questions

What is counselling and psychotherapy?

Counselling and psychotherapy are umbrella terms that refer to talking therapies that enable people to overcome or adapt to presenting difficulties in their lives. It is an opportunity for a person to make changes in their life through a process of exploring aspects of themselves to gain deeper insight and self-awareness in a safe, confidential space.

What accreditation should counsellors and psychotherapists have?

Fully qualified counsellors and psychotherapists are accredited by the British Association for Counselling and/or Psychotherapy (BACP), United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), or National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS).

What sort of issues do people bring to counselling/ psychotherapy?

Issues range from anxiety, stress, depression, low self-esteem, coping with a crisis in life such as bereavement, unemployment, or physical illness, family and relationship difficulties, to trauma.

What is online counselling and how does it work?

Video counselling: You can see me face-to-face from your computer whilst engaging in therapy using a secure and encrypted video platform. We can agree on which platform works best for you.

Telephone sessions: Like video counselling without the visual aspects. An advantage of telephone therapy is that non-verbal communication can be carried in your tone of voice and pace of speech, which I will pick up on.

How does counselling or psychotherapy work?

Counselling and psychotherapy provide an opportunity to develop a greater understanding of our difficulties, to comprehend and clarify what was previously unclear, and with this new awareness, to identify and implement changes in our lives. There’s no single explanation for how therapy works because each therapeutic relationship is unique and tailored to individual needs. But at the heart of it is a strong therapeutic relationship.

How many sessions do I need?

It is never possible to say at the start how many sessions will be needed. However, we will regularly review whether you are finding the sessions helpful. When you no longer feel as though you need to continue, we can also agree on a plan for ending. I always recommend starting with six sessions.

Will counselling or psychotherapy help me?

Everyone responds differently to counselling and psychotherapy. Most people find it useful just to have an opportunity to talk things through with someone who is an independent person who fosters a trusting and compassionate therapeutic relationship to facilitate meaningful discussions and potential for change.

What if I find it hard to talk in the sessions?

This is to be expected at times. In some sessions, you will find it hard to stop talking, and in others, you might find it hard to start. I am highly skilled in understanding and recognising when things become hard to talk about. It might be that things come out in a single word format sometimes, don’t worry - it still provides some material to work on in your therapy. It’s quite a common concern to feel uneasy or embarrassed at the thought of sharing your feelings with others, especially when first starting therapy. This is totally natural – it takes time for a sense of trust to develop between us, and the sense of closeness that develops is often immensely strengthening and supportive.

How often will I need therapy?

All sessions are weekly, and we will meet at the same time on the same day each week. Regular therapy sessions are important because they maintain therapeutic momentum, strengthen our relationship, reinforce new skills and coping strategies, and provide a consistent support system for ongoing personal growth. Although session frequency can be flexible and can be tailored to your needs.

What happens if I don’t want to continue with the therapy anymore?

When you embark on the journey of therapy, we will discuss what happens if you feel you no longer wish to continue. We can work out and talk through why you wish to end the therapy, and any issues of ending can be addressed. Sometimes, not wanting to continue or attend could signal that you are struggling with difficult feelings. I can help identify with you if this is the case, and often working through this can mark a significant point in moving forward.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes, this is a private and confidential space. There are exceptions to confidentiality, such as serious risks of harm to yourself or others, legal requirements like court orders or anti-terrorism laws, or situations where you are unable to give informed consent. As counsellors, we follow ethical guidelines to protect your privacy while also fulfilling our duty of care to ensure safety.
